Steve Farmer

About the Artist

Originally from Halifax, Nova Scotia, Steve Farmer’s love of art led him to NSCAD University in the 1980s where he found a connection with photography.  He pursued undergraduate studies and graduated in 1989 with his BFA.

After completing university Steve began his own photographic business.  While learning from contemporary photographers and focusing on strengths as a fine artist, for over 25 years he has built his business on both technical and artistic approaches to the medium.

Throughout his career Steve's subject matter has ranged from isolated Nova Scotian islands to large, consumptive industrial sites. He has been entrusted to photograph collections of some of the most prominent Canadian artists both privately, through the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia and by the National Gallery of Canada to name just a few. He has been called upon to photograph dignitaries that have made their way through Halifax including Presidents, Prime Ministers, and Royalty. However, when Steve takes photos for himself his true passion lies within and around the industrial landscape.

Currently, when Steve is not being contracted by some of Atlantic Canada’s largest corporations he can be found in the classrooms of NSCAD University where he teaches both Lighting and Digital Photography. Steve enjoys teaching as much as he does shooting, sharing his love of art and photography and providing a new generation with hands on skills to use in their own practice.

Steve lives with his family in Ketch Harbour, Nova Scotia. He regularly exhibits with Pavia Gallery.

Artist Statement

Photography is my way of expression and interpretation. My photographic strengths are in both art and industrial documentation, but industrial images certainly feed my passion.  The connections between teaching – art – industry are intertwined and act as a catalyst.

Existing in both the world of commerce and concept, the commercial work I pursue informs my practice as well as my approach to teaching emerging photographers.  My camera is an extension of self and is my vehicle for interpretation.

“Art is not so much a matter of methods and process as it is an affair of temperament of taste and of sentiment…in the hands of the artist, the photograph becomes a work of art…In a word the photograph is what the photographer makes it – an art or a trade.”  - William Howe Downe

It is often both.
