Artist Statement

I started drawing as a young child, and my work for many years has been based in observation of the visible world. Of late, though, I have become deeply interested in the moment of perception that occurs before individual form is perceived, but after an overall visual experience of objects, figures and space has occurred. I think of this as a very brief flash, in which one understands what one is looking at but has not yet separated forms and colours from each other. The paintings I am currently making are intended to re-ignite that brief experience, suggesting physical space, objects placed in relation to one another, light, shadow and time of day, but stopping short of the separation that happens when recognition and naming begins.
